For almost a year, Sheryl H. of Genola has faithfully served as a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. Starting off as a sub, the San Jose native became the volunteer coordinator for the Payson volunteer route.
For Sheryl, it has become more than just delivering a meal. At one client’s home, Sheryl turns to leave after delivering the meal when the senior looks at her and says, “Now where is my hug?” Her relationship with each client goes beyond small talk, as their conversations are like old friends catching up.
“It is amazing how much you get to know them in only 5 minutes each week,” said Sheryl. “I needed something, and they needed me. It was a right fit.”
The busy mother of six daughters delivers meals every Wednesday, as well as coordinating the other volunteer schedules for her route. She even delivers meals when the regular driver doesn’t show up. She often takes some of her daughters to deliver with her as a way to teach them about volunteerism. Her love for her clients and passion really sets her apart as a volunteer.
Thanks for being such a great volunteer, Sheryl! We couldn’t do it without you.
